- SPACE KING * version 4.5 * Notes from the Author.
- SPACE KING is published by Eternity Zone Gaming.
- Shareware, registration $5.00
- -----------------------------
-
- Greetings new and veteran SPACE KING players! This... is version
- 4.5! This update, more than any other, reflects the suggestions of
- you players of the game! Full version history can be found within
- the game, but here is much of what is new in version 4.5...
-
- Immediately after you start the game, you will see a new loading
- indicator graphic (that is, if you played the last version of the
- game). And, once the game starts... you will be treated with new
- graphics on the opening screens. I never really liked the 'mesh' art
- that I used, but the last version contained so many cosmetic
- improvements (meaning I already had a lot to update/finish) that I
- went with that look. The new artwork, you will agree (if you know
- what is good for you--ha), is very nice and I am finally happy with
- it. Let me hear you say it... "Yip-eeee!!!"
-
- The Program Cons from ZDNet were...
- * Limited planetary destinations
- * No off switch for the music
- Dave's Place also mentioned that there was no off switch for the
- sounds so I decided to 'correct' that. I personally do NOT think
- that the game should be played without sounds. I also think it is
- silly to add a sound option within the game as there are many ways to
- mute sound in Win, but... I -can- be a silly guy. Let me add that
- the sounds in SPACE KING are specifically and strategically placed
- and without sounds I do not think that the playability of the game is
- as good, but... if you must play with the mute switch on (I.e. the
- sound off) you now can. Please note that the sounds toggle uses a
- VB6 (Visual Basic) application so it requires MSVBVM60.DLL to be
- located either in the system directory or in the same directory as
- the game. If you do not have MSVBVM60.DLL (VB6 support) the game
- will function normally except for the fact that you will not be able
- to turn the music/sounds off internally. A quick note here... the
- VB6 library file, mentioned above, is not included with the game
- because it is a large library file (1 meg or so). Also, this dll is
- one that most of you already have on your computers and those of you
- who don't have it probably don't want to turn the sounds off anyway.
- However, if you want the file and cannot find it... let me know. :-)
-
- I also added more places to travel to in the form of Satellites!
- This really is a nice addition!! There are 7 new travel locations
- (the satellites), three of which generate an actual travel screen.
- On the satellites you will find properties; also very nice! There
- are 28 properties that can be bought and built upon. The properties
- generate rent, which you (naturally) can collect! I got this
- properties idea after playing a Monopoly clone and I think you will
- enjoy this addition. The satellite screens are quite nice. (Oh,
- Monopoly is a trademark of some really big company!)
-
- PJ wrote with a lot of (a ton of) very good suggestions and I used
- many of them. Where do I begin here? Hmm. Well, let me start with
- the opening Notice (if your screen resolution isn't set properly).
- If you receive this notice, you can now stop the game, before it
- starts, and reset your resolution. (However, if you are far-sited
- and cannot see the screen because your glasses aren't on... there is
- nothing that I can do for you!) There are many colour change
- indicators that have also been added to the game; three examples are
- as follows: if you don't have Blackhole insurance or need a computer
- fix; if you have passengers that need to be dropped. BJ, er, PJ
- (sorry I was thinking about something else) also suggested making the
- stock buttons (Buy/Sell) on the stock screen larger so I did (as I
- thought I should have before I released the last version, but I
- didn't). The Station also now has, thanks to the suggestion by PJ,
- an option to fill your oxygen and fuel tanks, which I really like,
- saving all of those "9" keystrokes. Although, I kind of like
- stroking my keys (darn, there I go again).... Lenny's screen and the
- Bonds screen also have some additional information that should help
- your playability of the game. ((PJ has nothing to do with the new
- Lenny screen feature, but this seems like a good time to mention it.
- I have been wanting to add another way to gamble besides that blasted
- scratch off ticket. There is now a nifty slot machine which really
- is very cool even though you will probably only play with it a few
- times! No, my mind _wasn't_ back there... yours was!!)) PJ also
- suggested (and someone else did at some point) making the stock
- prices more realistic. You will notice that stock price changes are
- not as drastic as they used to be, adding to--as PJ says--the mystery
- of the game. Thank you very much for your ideas, PJ!!!
-
- Winterheart suggested the ability to save more than one game at a
- time. It seems old Winterheart has multiple users on his computer
- and is afraid that someone might wipe out his game. Other people are
- thinking about the future of the presidency, endangered species (is
- that the same thing?), the Y2K 'problem,' etc., but Winterheart is
- worried about his saved game. Way to go!! ((I am just teasing you,
- Winterheart!)) He (and you) now has (have) the ability to save up
- to 3 different games. I really like this option... even though I
- don't use it. :-) Thanks, Winterheart!! ((Hmm. Winter. Heart....
- Is that anything like Cold hands, Warm Heart? No. No, I don't think
- it is....))
-
- Joergen from Denmark (as if you couldn't guess that from his name)
- suggested an option for better shields. I added this to the game and
- called this option MegaShields, which will provide you with--for a
- cost--better shield protection! Great idea, Joergen!! In America,
- we love to shorten names and we also love nicknames so... _Joe_ also
- mentioned something about the Buy/Sell screen. Joey asked (PJ did
- also, but not in the same words) if it "was possible to make a
- warning (telling) if you have made a false calculation (on the
- Buy/Sell screens), so that you are not kicked out of the game because
- you do not have money enough for buying shares or because you simply
- click on the false line." There are times, in SPACE KING, where
- (perish the thought) you have to use your THINKING-CAP!! Oh, wait...
- you are from Denmark. Let's see... you speak, uh, Danish, right?
- Okay, then, uhhh, here you go... YU MUS USEN YUR TOPPIN-NOGGIN!!
- *LOL* Joergen, you are a registered user, so please know that I am
- just kidding with you. Not everything in the game can be -given- OR
- be too easy. So, get out your handy-dandy calculator and... use it.
- :-) Another reason why I am joking with Joergen is that he also
- wrote that "I think that your game really could (be) one that people
- really would like to buy at an ordinary market price when it is fully
- developed." The ordinary price for this game _is_ $5.00 and each
- version _is_ fully developed!! Okay... (well, thanks Joergen) I
- think I had better MOVEN ONVEN. (Translation: Move on.)
-
- And, Charles wrote to me and talked about, as he says, the "Second(?)
- Law of Thermodynamics." There were some hard to replicate/duplicate
- bugs that I fixed as a result for--smarty pants--"Charlie Boltzmann."
- ((I suddenly had a Dennis Miller obscure reference flashback...
- excuse me.)) Thanks to Charles for that and for his suggestion to get
- rid of some of the dialog boxes (notable on the Buy/Sell screens--
- where I improved other areas as well--on the station screen, and on
- the Lenny screen)!
-
- Other improvements and additions were also done and added--such as
- some sound fixes and the addition of... yes, the Psycho Aliens (in
- the spirit of the game... this is my way of recognizing the Psycho
- Circus Tour--KISS--heh heh--great concert!). Someone suggested
- adding ATMs to the game a while back, to store credits on planets
- other than Earth-2. ATMs have been added (so has a transaction fee
- if you use them). SPACE KING, I should mention, does get
- progressively harder as the game goes on and I added more to the game
- to reflect this progression. Another improvement is found in the
- installation routine. Please note that installing this new version
- of SPACE KING will not remove the old one from your system (even if
- you place the game in the same default directory). This new version
- of SPACE KING has an uninstall routine (although I don't know why you
- would need one), but version 4.0 did not. To remove an old version
- from your system, simply delete the directory and any shortcuts you
- have for the game before installing the new one. Future versions of
- the game will be able to detect an old version, but this new version
- will not be able to detect if you have an old version installed. And
- remember, leaving the old version of the game while installing this
- update should not cause any problems (I am just mentioning all of
- this because I am trying to fill some time before DS9 comes on).
-
- While you are reading this, it gives me the opportunity to remind you
- that SPACE KING is Shareware. If you like SPACE KING and continue to
- use it, please register the game for only $5.00! Please. You can
- get more information about registering from within the game. If you
- are ready to register now, though, feel free to do so via one of the
- following two links:

- Thank you in advance for your registration, enjoy this update, feel
- free to write with suggestions, and... party like it is 1999 (because
- it is)!! Have a safe one and... take 'er easy...!! *LOL*
